The first capitol building at
Austin was partially built from logs
and sawn lumber obtained at Bas.
trop, in the heart of the Lost Pine
area, according to the Texas Forest
Service. Today, wood production
from the pine -hardwood area fur-
nishes much of the economic life
blood of the state.
The Texas Forest Service operates
nine pine seed orchards. These
orchards are made up of trees se-
lected genetically for outstanding
characteristics. Superior seed pro-
duced by the trees will be sold to
forest landowners for direct seeding
and used in the state forest tree
nursery to produce quality seedlings
for sale to landowners.

In 1951 the Texas Forest Service
launched an extensive program in
tree improvement research. It was
the first Southern state forestry
agency to undertake this type of
research. Much credit for financing
the program is due units of the
forest products industry. A labora-
tory and greenhouse on the campus
of Texas A&M University is the
operations center for this program.

It is a violation of the law to
either carelessly or deliberately set
on fire the lands of another. In
1951 the Legislature made it a
felony for a person to deliberately
set fire to grass or forest land
owned by another. They also en-
acted a law making it a misde-
meanor to negligently set, or cause
to be set on fire, the lands of
another. The Texas Forest Service
is primarily responsible for enforc-
ing these statutes.
The Texas Forest Service con-
ducts an active program in the
field of wood utilization. Through
its Forest Products Laboratory; both
research and education are con-
ducted, aimed at increasing the
effectiveness of use of wood.
